Star Castle’s vIneyard is now producing the second vintage of Holy Vale wine to be enjoyed at dinner; Rosé, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
We also organise Wine Tastings and Lobster Lunches at the vineyard. Find out more below…

Seven years ago Robert Francis, wine lover, connoisseur and – of course – Star Castle owner, embarked on a life-long dream to produce his own fine wines. With the help and guidance of the one of the world’s foremost wine producers, Willi Opitz, he planted 7,000 Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris vines across seven acres of beautiful land on the island of St Mary’s.

We are delighted to announce that the 2014 and 2015 vintages of the Silver Carn Chardonnay, Silver Carn Pinot Gris, Holy Vale Rose, Holy Vale Pinot Noir classic & Holy Vale Pinot Noir reserve from the Star Castle Holy Vale vineyard are now being served.

Over the past ten years or so, the UK has gained a reputation for producing excellent sparkling wines made up of the traditional Champagne constituent grapes of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. UK producers have been less successful at making still wines from these same grapes, mainly because the colder climate in the UK is more suited to producing Germanic Rieslings and the like. However, a combination of the micro-climate on the Isles of Scilly, Robert’s passionate commitment and perfectionism, paired with the steadfast support and advice of Willi Opitz mean that the new vineyard is now one of a handful in the UK producing fine Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs and one of, if not the only one producing Pinot Gris.

The wines are currently being served at the Star Castle’s restaurant to accompany the award winning menu, however guests of the hotel and visitors to the vineyard can also enjoy a glass of wine on the vineyard’s deck in the most lovely surroundings. Also on offer is a delicious locally produced Lobster Lunch, which can be pre-booked and includes a glass of HolyVale wine and a fresh lobster, caught by Robert each morning click here to read more.

Even without the possibility of tasting these fine wines, Britain’s most southerly vineyard is a delight to visit. Described by world-renowned wine expert, Michael Broadbent (author of Vintage Wine: 50 years of tasting) as “one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in the world.” This newest UK winery has been cleverly converted from an old barn which also plays host to an exhibition “The Story of Wine”, telling the story of a year in the life of a vineyard and the winemaking process.

Wine Tastings

We welcome everyone to visit HolyVale Vineyard and Winery. Open March until the end of October, Monday to Friday 12:30 – 16:30. Evenings and weekends are by appointment only.

For Wine Tastings, the visit begins with a  short tour of the vineyards and a brief introduction to viticulture at HolyVale from Robert Francis the proprietor and wine maker. The tour continues into the tasting room which overlooks the winery, here Robert explains the process of making the wine alongside the tasting.

The tasting itself includes five wines carefully selected by Robert which are made up of his own HolyVale wines and a couple of Roberts favourite wines from the rest of the world. At the end of the tasting you are encouraged to enjoy a 6th glass of your choice from the wines that have been tasted. Each wine is matched with a canapé providing a perfect start to the evening.

The Wine Shop

At the end of the tasting you are encouraged to visit the shop where you can purchase the wines you taste or place an order for delivery on the mainland once you return home. The shop offers both the HolyVale wines and Roberts recommended wines from the rest of the world!

Tastings are £18.50 per person. To book please contact the Star Castle reception and we’ll advise you of the next available tasting sessions. Just call 01720 422317 or email

Lobster lunch

The Holy Vale Vineyard, the perfect setting for a sumptuous ‘one mile’ lobster lunch.

It’s hard to imagine a more picturesque, alfresco lunch venue or a more locally sourced menu than the one that will be served at the Star Castle’s HolyVale vineyard on the Isles of Scilly this year.  Described by esteemed wine expert, Michael Broadbent, as ‘one of the most beautiful vineyard settings in the world’, this picture perfect winery bottled its first vintage of excellent wines in 2015 and this year it will be continuing to serve the delicious lobster lunch, made up of ingredients, all sourced no more than a mile away. Visitors to the vineyard will be able to enjoy a glass of fine wine produced just an arms stretch away, a plate of fresh lobster, collected that very morning from St Mary’s harbour and a handful of new potatoes and rocket salad grown in the kitchen garden of the nearby Star Castle Hotel.

The vineyard and it’s al-fresco eatery are the latest attractions for visitors to the beautiful Isles of Scilly, who are welcome to visit free of charge or to attend an afternoon or evening wine tasting hosted by vineyard owner and connoisseur, Robert Francis,  at £18.50 per person, including five wines and complementing tapas.  Lobster lunch and a glass of HolyVale wine will cost £26.50.
