Summer Newsletter 2019

Dear Guest

With summer 2019 now upon us we write to you with details of our summer holiday treats, autumn breaks, Christmas & New Year packages as well as information on the Taste of Scilly month in September. We also include promotions for Walk Scilly and details of our Food & Wine weekend in October, which was a really encouraging success in the spring.

So far in 2019 we have enjoyed a very busy spring (for which we are grateful to you all) despite having had some more mixed weather in May & June than in 2018, all indications are that those settled conditions will return in July and August. It will be lovely to enjoy a fine period in August for the holidays, 2018 was a really special year for wildlife on Scilly during the summer, particularly marine life. We are already seeing signs of the abundant dolphins, whales and seabirds that graced us last year. This will certainly be something to enjoy again in July, August and September.

We are very pleased with the results of our winter refurbishments and are working on our schedule for winter 2019\2020. The gardens are looking particularly lovely this spring, so a great deal of thanks goes to the outside team for their efforts. Many of us are looking forward to a little trip to South Africa this Autumn for the wedding of Gary (our assistant manager) and Angie (our restaurant manager) who many of you know. Congratulations to you both on your forthcoming nuptials.

In island news we enjoyed another very successful gig weekend in early May. It was particularly hectic as always, for the Mermaid, but James’ new managers Lucie & Joe coped very well and the place is still standing. It is definitely worth popping in and seeing them while you’re over. On the transport side we have enjoyed a fairly orderly period, which will only be improved on in 2020 as the confirmation of the new helicopter in Penzance is now firmly underway. We are assured it will be in operation for the start of next season.

On the family front Robert is fully engaged still as Chairman of the Council, looking forward to pushing on with various community improvement projects. The main news is that James’ youngest brother David and his wife Chloe are expecting a baby boy in the Autumn, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming the new addition to the family, so congratulations to them both.  Many of you will remember James McCloy who was our restaurant manager for many years; he is now running the Vineyard alongside Robert so there will be anther familiar face at HolyVale.

All the family very much hope that our newsletter finds you well and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Castle in the 2nd half of 2019.
