Christmas Newsletter 2018

Dear Guest

Seasons greeting from the Francis family and all of us at the Star Castle.

As per usual we would like to extend to you our sincere thanks for continuing to visit us in 2018. It has been another busy season with one of the best summers for many a year.

It came as no surprise that the weather turned out so nice after the particularly rough and cold winter. We understand that we are due another ‘proper winter’ and hopefully this will reflect in a proper summer for 2019.

Now December is upon us we are full tilt into this year’s winter maintenance program. A particular focus will be in the Castle building, the Castle restaurant and also the gardens.

On the family front Robert has had something of an ‘upgrade’ in his council career after being elected as Chairman of the Council back in May. He is revelling in the responsibility but is also having to get used to being much busier!! The primary focus seems to be on improving infrastructure, the housing stock, public realm and of course transport provision.  You will all be pleased to know that the political issues surrounding the re-start of the Penzance helicopter service seem to have abated, much to the relief of the islanders who have been somewhat deflated by the whole fiasco over the last couple of years. The second planning application was granted unanimously without any appeals and preparations for the construction work has already begun!!

The family home in Mawnan Smith is now completed and is proving to be a good base for Theresa and a useful mainland bolthole for the rest of us. The younger members of the family thoroughly enjoyed spending time on the islands this summer.  With the fantastic weather, playing around in boats, the abundance of whales and dolphins, finding other interesting marine creatures that seemed to be here in vast numbers, Scilly was the place to be. James and Ella found it quite demanding, operating the hotel whilst at the same time entertaining the higher number of friends and family clamouring to visit, tiring but fun.

We are including all the usual details for 2019, including our Recharge & Relax extras, Walk Scilly deals, late April break and our new voucher scheme for families which will provide exchangeable vouchers for use on local activities such as sailing, horse-riding, bike hire and snorkelling with seals.

We look forward to welcoming you next season.

Our warmest seasonal greetings for a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a prosperous 2019.
